Even though the cost of wind power has decreased dramatically in the past 10 years, the technology requires a higher initial investment than fossil-fueled generators. The major challenge to using wind as a source of power is that the wind is intermittent and it does not always blow when electricity is needed. Wind energy cannot be stored (unless batteries are used); and not all winds can be harnessed to meet the timing of electricity demands.

They said that wind power must compete with conventional generation sources on a cost basis. I believe this cost will be received back in do time with the savings. I donÂ’t know about you but I donÂ’t know of any power source that can be saved with out the use of batteries. Yes if you live in a place that the wind will not blow for several days thin you might want to reconsider your alternative energy source. Can you tell me wear in the world the wind donÂ’t blow for that long? I live in Kansas the wind never quits blowing.

Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is needed. Wind resource development may compete with other uses for the land and those alternative uses may be more highly valued than electricity generation.

I live in Wichita and wind power is the alterative energy source that I see most cities going for.

Although wind power plants have relatively little impact on the environment compared to other conventional power plants, there is some concern over the noise produced by the rotor blades, aesthetic (visual) impacts, and sometimes birds have been killed by flying into the rotors. I have never been to a wind farm so I do not know what kind of noise they produce. Why are we warred over some birds being killed by flying into the rotors. Is this going to stop people from putting up wind turbines on there properties I hope not!!

Added caffeine can be temporarily energizing, but often leads to a rapid dip in energy and can be potentially habit forming. An eight ounce energy drink has about 115 calories and 80 milligrams of caffeine.
• Fitness waters - these waters are laced with an assortment of nutrients, herbs, flavorings and/or sweeteners. These enhancements are usually too insufficient to have any meaningful impact on your health; plus these waters can be costly. As for calories, they can contain anywhere from 10 to 100 or more calories in a 16 ounce drink.
• Carbonated beverages - such as regular or diet sodas can be high in sugar or artificial sweeteners and caffeine. Colas are also high in phosphates, which bind with calcium and weaken bones. Regular soda can contain up to 200 or more calories for 16 ounces.
• Coffee, tea and lattes - are also very popular. But along with the caffeine, they often contain added sugars and fats which can add up to as many as 450 calories for a 16 ounce drink. Since most caffeinated products provide very few nutrients, it is typically advised to keep intake low.
• Flavored waters - are waters with a touch of natural flavoring. By itself, this is fine. Unfortunately, however, many flavored waters contain sugar (some even have more than a can of soda pop) or caffeine and other additives, all of which should be avoided.

We seem to live in a society of immediate gratification, where we want it now, not tomorrow. We usually describe the process of inflammation like a series of dominos all set up and ready for something to tip over the first domino and start the chain reaction. The first one tips over the second one, which tips over the third one and so on. This is called the "domino effect." Clever people can set up these dominos in an amazing array of complicated designs.

Inflammation is a process much like that. A single event may trigger a domino effect of inflammatory reactions. While many of the reactions are fairly predictable, many others are not. They seem to involve amazingly complicated patterns unique to the individual. Still, all inflammation exhibits five basic signs caused by four basic triggers.

Signs of inflammation

With tissue injury, inflammation is part of the healing process:

1. Redness: An injured area needs an increased supply of nutrients and proteins carried in the blood. So, blood supply increases and the tissue turns red (Latin: rubor).
2. Swelling : The injured area is bathed in healing proteins and substances to control bleeding, as well as an increased supply of plasma for transport of waste. This causes the injured area to swell (Latin: tumor).
3. Pain: The injured area needs to be protected. We instinctively guard an injury because we feel or anticipate pain (Latin: dolor).
4. Heat: The damaged tissue now becomes weakened and so it is susceptible to infection. White blood cells rush to the area and defend the fragile cells from microbes. A sign that this is working is heat or fever in the damaged area (Latin: calor).
5. Loss of Function: This process is accompanied by a reduction in function of the injured area until it is healed (Latin: functio laesa).

Inflammation triggers

Inflammation is the response to four basic triggers: trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress. All four of these triggers cause tissue injury. Our body responds to injury with inflammation.

Trauma
We usually think of trauma as a direct injury that causes pain and distress. However, a sedentary lifestyle is also a serious cause of trauma. Why? Because our body was made to move! The more we move, the more we are able to move – and the more we want to move. The less we move, the less we are able to move. Our muscles and other tissues shorten and atrophy. Then, any movement causes injury. So, the less we move, the less we want to move.

Toxins
Toxicity causes cells to rupture in the same way that a needle causes a balloon to pop. Is there any doubt that we live in a toxic world? Deficiency

C., prehistoric indigenous groups began the cultivation of a series of native plants, including beans, opuntia, peppers and agave, etc., and in Pre-Columbian times, Nopal was considered an important staple food (for both humans and livestock), a beverage, a medicine, a source of dye and was included in religious and magical rites. During the Spanish Colonial Period, Nopal gained further importance as forage when cattle was introduced to the semiarid areas and there was a consequent depletion of grasslands. Its beneficial uses as a medicine and beverage were also gaining in reputation.

In the De la Cruz-Badiano Codex of 1552, it was noted that Nopal treated several ailments and was used to cure burns and soothe wounds, and Friar Motolinia said, "these Indians, from a land so sterile that they lack water, drink the juice of these leaves of nopal." Nopal received its botanical genus name, Opuntia, from Tournefot, who thought the plant was similar to a thorny plant that grew in the town of Opus, in Greece.

After the Spanish conquest, Nopal spread from Mexico to practically all the Americas (from Canada to Patagonia, in Argentina) and may now be found in tropical and arid regions throughout the world, including the southwestern United States. It grows in Israel, where the Prickly Pear is called tzabar (Hebrew:) and it is the origin of the slang term, Sabra, meaning a native-born Israeli Jew.

Some of the constituents in Nopal include water, fat, mucopolysaccharide soluble fibers, carbohydrate, protein, saponins, glycosides, a flavonoid (quercetin), minerals and large amounts of B1, B6, niacin, riboflavin and pantothenic acid.

I've been writing about inflammation, its causes, and how to fight it. My articles typically involve sharing information I found when doing searches on Google. I receive weekly health and wellness newsletters that contain important information regarding your health. As part of my passion for healthier lifestyles, I like to share that information with you.

There has never been a more important newsletter than the one I received this past weekend. It's by TriVita, and is written by Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer. The article is called Important Health News - Protect Yourself from the Flu. As we all know, unless you've been living under a rock, the H1N1 flu virus is attacking Americans at an alarming rate.

Is there a way to protect your self from the H1N1 virus? According to Mr. Minshew, when it comes to fighting the flu we need to focus on three pathways, transmission, infection, and inflammation. In his article, he explains his theory. However, I'd like to focus on the third pathway, inflammation. Below is an excerpt form his article. Inflammation

We will begin at the ending: Inflammation from the immune system that incapacitates - even kills - people when they have the flu. MOST IMPORTANT: The flu kills people not by transmission or by infection, but by an inflammatory immune system response called the "cytokine storm."

Our immune system is designed to neutralize and excrete any non-self protein it finds. That includes the influenza virus. The size of the immune response needs to be equivalent to the strength of the invader.

Think of this as a building on fire: small fires are extinguished by local fire fighters. Some fires are so big that fire fighters from other departments have to be called in to help. So, fires are designated as "one-alarm,""two-alarm,""three-alarm,"and so on. At a certain point, our immune system pulls all of the alarms and immune system fractions from all over our body rush to put out the fire, so to speak. However, this is a case of fighting fire with fire. Cytokines are inflammatory. They kill viruses and bacteria by creating inflammation.

The cytokine storm is responsible for all of the symptoms we feel: fever, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, etc. It is also responsible for filling the lungs with mucous (pneumonia/pneumonitis) which is often the fatal trigger in influenza, SARS, Hanta virus, bubonic plague, etc.

To survive we must modulate the cytokine storm so that it does its job but doesn't overwork and kill us. We make it work smarter, not harder. So we don't use Vitamin C or Echinacea or anything that "boosts"the immune system. We use immune system modulators so we get exactly the right response. Quercetin (Betalains in Sonoran Bloom Nopalea are quercetin bioflavonoids), green tea polyphenols (found in Energy Now!) and ginseng (Panax and Eleutherococcus found in Adaptogen 10 Plus) all balance the immune system and decrease the cytokine storm.

Lifestyle changes are an important part of treatment for chronic pain. Getting regular sleep at night and not taking daytime naps should help. Stopping smoking helps, also, because the nicotine in cigarettes can make some medicines less effective. Smokers also tend to have more pain than nonsmokers.

It has been reported that many forms of chronic pain comes from inflammation. Inflammation is an immune response; a response to an infection, an irritation, or an injury. Immune cells are called to the site through the blood stream. The blood vessels near the site become miraculously permeable and the site becomes warm and red due to the increased blood flow (warm, hence inflammation).

Of all the pain causing disorders, joint pain is the most common problem people face as they grow older. A recent report estimates that 21% of the adult population is affected by some form of joint-related pain. And that number is expected to rise even higher as baby boomers age, so by 2030, almost 67 million people will suffer from joint problems.

What can be done to relieve pain within the joints?

First off, we need to understand joint pain and some causes of joint pain. Joints which bear the most weight are mostly affected, like the knees, hips and spine.

Only as an example, let's focus on the knee. If you suffer from knee pain, you're not alone. According to the Mayo Clinic website, "almost one in three Americans older than age 45 reports some type of knee pain, and it's a common reason that people visit their doctors or the emergency room." [1]

There is a lot of information on the Mayo Clinic website (see links below), and since I'm not a medical professional, I can only quote the information they have posted. With that said, here is some information regarding knee pain symptoms:

Because of the knee's complexity, the number of structures involved, the amount of use it gets over a lifetime, and the range of injuries and diseases that can cause knee pain, the signs and symptoms of knee problems can vary widely." Joint pain, not just in the knee, can be due to a variety of reasons. Age is the primary cause of arthritis, but other risk factors are obesity, heredity, injury such as a fracture, or athletes who overuse their joints. These factors are often associated with osteoarthritis.

Joint pain can also be caused by inflammation. Many of you have probably heard the term inflammation many times before. When you joint becomes inflammed, it causes severe pain, and limits your joints range of motion. Inflammed joints, according to some health care professionals, are the main reason people experience so much pain. What is inflammation and how does it relate to joint pain? And how do we get pain relief from that inflammatiom?

Inflammation is a process in which the body's white blood cells and chemicals help protect us from infection and foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses.

As we conclude, I think the last question on the most frequently asked questions list, regarding TriVita's Sonoran Bloom Nopalea™ is probably the most important of all. As mentioned in my previous two posts (where we covered the sugar, salt and iron content of Nopalea, and the compatibility of prescription medications) questions always arise when it comes to new health and wellness products. This is not unique to Nopalea!

Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, writes a Weekly Wellness Report. In the latest report, he wrote about the top three questions asked regarding Nopalea™. This is the third most frequently asked question:

How much Nopalea can I take in a day?

"The label recommends one to three ounces daily. This is based on minimum amounts in otherwise healthy people. However, the greater the level of your inflammation, the more anti-inflammatory strategies you will need. That makes sense, doesn't it? You wouldn't want to quench a forest fire with a single bucket of water!" [1]

Endobronchial inflammation, the main cause of asthma, is one such disease that is treated with more than one anti-inflammatory strategy. According to an article published by Pub Med, the writer mentions the many different strategies one can use to treat asthma. However, and this is just my opinion, if we can prevent the inflammation, by using a product like Nopalea, we would not have to treat the disease. As a matter of fact, the article even mentions prevention. "Patients must be educated to increase their understanding of the benefits of preventive rather than symptomatic forms of treatment for this (asthma) chronic disease." [2]

As I mentioned in my previous post, when it comes any new health and wellness product there are always questions about why, when and how to use it. Sometimes there are even concerns regarding the product, which leads to the second most frequently asked question about Sonoran Bloom Nopalea™:

Will Nopalea interfere with my medications?

According to TriVita's latest Weekly Wellness Report, Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, has this to say about the interference of Nopalea with prescription drug medications:

"Your physician and pharmacist know you best - ask them! We will say this: With over 200 papers published on the benefits of the Nopal cactus superfruit in human health, we have not found even one negative reaction or drug interaction. The only caution we discovered concerns the blood-thinner warfarin (Coumadin)." [1]

"Warfarin is an anticoagulant. It is used to decrease the clotting ability of the blood and to help prevent harmful clots from forming in the blood vessels. It is often used to prevent or treat deep venous thrombosis, a condition in which harmful blood clots form in the blood vessels of the legs. These blood clots can travel to the lungs and cause a condition called pulmonary embolism. Warfarin is also used to prevent or treat blood clots that are caused by certain heart conditions or open-heart surgery." [2]

If you take warfarin you need to speak with your pharmacist. Nopalea is a fruit juice. In rare instances, people on warfarin will be restricted from consuming fruit juices for a short time while their medication stabilizes. Only your physician and pharmacist know if you should be restricted from fruit juices at this time, so ask them before you take it. But TriVita has not found a single instance of drug interaction in the medical literature; Nopalea should be very safe.

Here are some warnings about Warfarin. These are taken from the Mayo Clinic website:

"Warfarin, especially if taken incorrectly, increases your risk of dangerous bleeding. Warfarin also can interact badly with some foods, prescription medicines and over-the-counter supplements. If you accidentally cut yourself while taking warfarin, you may bleed heavily. You're more likely to have bleeding problems if you're older than 75 or take other medications that can further increase your bleeding risk." [3]

While I did not find anything regarding a dangerous interaction between warfarin and Nopalea, I'll have to take TriVita's word on what they have found. I did see where cranberry juice and cranberries can have an affect on it. "Consumption of cranberries or cranberry juice can affect the way warfarin works and can increase your risk of bleeding. While an occasional glass of cranberry juice is unlikely to injure you, you should avoid drinking it regularly." [3]

Before taking any health and wellness supplement, talk to your doctor, especially if you're taking prescription medications. If you're suffering from inflammation, ask your doctor if Nopalea can help.

As with any new health and wellness product, there are always questions about why, when and how to use it. The more popular the product, the more frequently the questions are repeated. This is the case with TriVita's newest product, Sonoran Bloom Nopalea™.

Within TriVita's latest Weekly Wellness Report, Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, attempts to answer some of the more common questions about Nopalea™, TriVita's wonderful anti-inflammatory product.

The most frequently asked questions are too important not to dedicate an individual post for each question. Because of the importance of these questions, I'll break them down into three separate articles and then try to find some research, or case studies, if applicable, to back up what Mr. Minshew has to say. I may also leave you with a thought provoking question, something for you to ponder.

How much sugar, salt and iron are in Nopalea?

"Nopalea™ contains NO ADDED SUGAR. It is naturally sweet. Yet it is still low-calorie and low-carbohydrate. Interestingly, the calories and carbohydrates will change from batch to batch depending on the harvest. Nopalea is "wildcrafted," meaning that Nopalea is not cultivated, and no fertilizers, pesticides or chemicals of any kind are ever used - ever! It is harvested from the Sonoran Desert by natives just as it has been for thousands of years. Since it is not cultivated, the concentration of sugars and minerals in the plant change depending on how much rain we have that year. The label will accurately reflect the concentration of constituents for that harvest." [1]

When it comes to products that have been wildcrafted, there are strict guidelines that must be followed. According to Wikipedia, "in the United States of America, wildcrafted plants are regulated by the Organic Food Production Act of 1990. Harvesters must designate the area they are harvesting and provide a three-year history of the area that shows no prohibited substances have been applied there. A plan for harvesting must show that the harvest will sustain the wild crop. No prohibited substances can be added by processors." [2]

So as you can see by these strict guidelines, you can be assured that Nopalea is truly an all natural, organic product.

Mr. Minshew says that in providing the proper nutritional information to the consumer, Nopalea™ does present a challenge, and he continues his discussion by saying, "Nopalea™ is the first product of its kind. Therefore, no "standards" data existed before we created them. So, label changes happen because we created the testing standards to accurately measure the rare and powerful constituents of Nopalea." [1]

As mentioned previously, Nopalea™ comes from the nopal cactus that is found in the Sonoran Desert, located in the southwestern United States, and the northwestern parts of Mexico. Some historians have said that the ancient Mexican cultures, living in the high mountain volcanic regions, originally adopted the Nopal prickly pear cactus as a healing food and treasured this high mountain variety, relegating Nopal cactus as the supreme healing plant and food among its kings and warriors.

I'm not sure if that statement is correct, but if you search Google for Sonoran Bloom Nopalea, this is the type of information you will find, and nothing about other products created using the nopal cactus. As we all know, if there was another product, you would find it on the web by searching Google. So judge for your self! Is Nopalea™ a one of a kind product?

There are many drugs prescribed by doctors to help fight inflammation. These anti-inflammatory drugs have side effects for many users. Celebrex is one of the most popular anti-inflammatory drugs. However, there have been may side effects related to this drug. Some of those side effects reported by the drug companies include diarrhea, dizziness, indigestion, stomach pain, gas, nausea, or headache.

Celebrex is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known as a COX-2 inhibitor used to reduce the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in adults. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

There are two enzymes in the body called COX-1 and COX-2. COX-1 helps regulate the normal cell function in the stomach and blood. COX-2 plays some role in causing arthritis pain and inflammation. Celebrex is the first product to target the COX-2 enzyme, inhibiting only that enzyme.

Although Celebrex may be prescribed by your doctor to help fight inflammation, I believe the side effects this medication causes may be more harmful than the actual benefits it can provide. We usually describe the process of inflammation like a series of dominos all set up and ready for something to tip over the first domino and start the chain reaction. The first one tips over the second one, which tips over the third one and so on. This is called the "domino effect." Clever people can set up these dominos in an amazing array of complicated designs.

Inflammation is a process much like that. A single event may trigger a domino effect of inflammatory reactions. While many of the reactions are fairly predictable, many others are not. They seem to involve amazingly complicated patterns unique to the individual. Still, all inflammation exhibits five basic signs caused by four basic triggers.

Signs of inflammation

With tissue injury, inflammation is part of the healing process:

1. Redness: An injured area needs an increased supply of nutrients and proteins carried in the blood. So, blood supply increases and the tissue turns red (Latin: rubor).
2. Swelling : The injured area is bathed in healing proteins and substances to control bleeding, as well as an increased supply of plasma for transport of waste. This causes the injured area to swell (Latin: tumor).
3. Pain: The injured area needs to be protected. We instinctively guard an injury because we feel or anticipate pain (Latin: dolor).
4. Heat: The damaged tissue now becomes weakened and so it is susceptible to infection. White blood cells rush to the area and defend the fragile cells from microbes. A sign that this is working is heat or fever in the damaged area (Latin: calor).
5. Loss of Function: This process is accompanied by a reduction in function of the injured area until it is healed (Latin: functio laesa).

Inflammation triggers

Inflammation is the response to four basic triggers: trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress. All four of these triggers cause tissue injury. Our body responds to injury with inflammation.

Trauma
We usually think of trauma as a direct injury that causes pain and distress. However, a sedentary lifestyle is also a serious cause of trauma. Why? Because our body was made to move! The more we move, the more we are able to move – and the more we want to move. The less we move, the less we are able to move. Our muscles and other tissues shorten and atrophy. Then, any movement causes injury. So, the less we move, the less we want to move.

Toxins
Toxicity causes cells to rupture in the same way that a needle causes a balloon to pop. Is there any doubt that we live in a toxic world? An article in National Geographic estimated that humans create 700,000 tons of pollution and waste every day! Between these "exotoxins" (toxins created outside our body), and "endotoxins" (toxins created inside our body), we are bathed in inflammation-producing poison every moment of every day. Any successful strategy for reducing inflammation must address the level of toxins we face.

Deficiency
Deficiencies also cause inflammation. For example, an omega-3 essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency leaves the cell walls weak and unable to function normally. Again, cells are like balloons. If the balloon membrane is too thin, even a normal amount of air will make it pop. If the cell wall is too thin because of an omega-3 EFA deficiency, even normal cell activity will cause the cell to pop and trigger the domino effect of inflammation. Similarly, deficiency of other nutrients can have a catastrophic effect on cells within your body. (A deficiency in oxygen, water, sleep and circulation can also trigger inflammation.)

Stress
Emotional distress is also a cause of inflammation. When we appraise a situation to be stressful, our brain releases chemicals called catecholamines that trigger the release of many inflammatory processes. For example, stress causes the release of insulin – a pro-inflammatory hormone. Too much stress over too long a period of time will cause insulin resistance (IR), which is associated with obesity. Other stress-related chemicals reduce circulation to our digestive and reproductive systems and trigger inflammation from blood deficiency. Stress is a serious cause of inflammation!

First steps

We are made with the ability to respond to trauma, toxins, deficiency and stress with inflammation. Therefore, inflammation is not the enemy; however, runaway inflammation is definitely our enemy! I've been writing about natural pain relief associated with inflammation, its causes, and how to fight it. My articles typically involve sharing information I found when doing searches on Google. I receive weekly health and wellness newsletters that contain important information regarding your health. As part of my passion for healthier lifestyles, I like to share that information with you.

There has never been a more important newsletter than the one I received this past weekend. It's by TriVita, and is written by Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer. The article is called Important Health News - Protect Yourself from the Flu. As we all know, unless you've been living under a rock, the H1N1 flu virus is attacking Americans at an alarming rate.

Is there a way to protect your self from the H1N1 virus? According to Mr. Minshew, when it comes to fighting the flu we need to focus on three pathways, transmission, infection, and inflammation. Inflammation

We will begin at the ending: Inflammation from the immune system that incapacitates - even kills - people when they have the flu. MOST IMPORTANT: The flu kills people not by transmission or by infection, but by an inflammatory immune system response called the "cytokine storm."

Our immune system is designed to neutralize and excrete any non-self protein it finds. That includes the influenza virus. The size of the immune response needs to be equivalent to the strength of the invader.

Think of this as a building on fire: small fires are extinguished by local fire fighters. Some fires are so big that fire fighters from other departments have to be called in to help. So, fires are designated as "one-alarm,""two-alarm,""three-alarm,"and so on. At a certain point, our immune system pulls all of the alarms and immune system fractions from all over our body rush to put out the fire, so to speak. However, this is a case of fighting fire with fire. Cytokines are inflammatory. They kill viruses and bacteria by creating inflammation.

The cytokine storm is responsible for all of the symptoms we feel: fever, body aches, nausea, diarrhea, etc. It is also responsible for filling the lungs with mucous (pneumonia/pneumonitis) which is often the fatal trigger in influenza, SARS, Hanta virus, bubonic plague, etc.

To survive we must modulate the cytokine storm so that it does its job but doesn't overwork and kill us. We make it work smarter, not harder. So we don't use Vitamin C or Echinacea or anything that "boosts"the immune system. We use immune system modulators so we get exactly the right response. Of all the pain causing disorders, joint pain is the most common problem people face as they grow older. Only as an example, let's focus on the knee. If you suffer from knee pain, you're not alone. According to the Mayo Clinic website, "almost one in three Americans older than age 45 reports some type of knee pain, and it's a common reason that people visit their doctors or the emergency room." [1]

There is a lot of information on the Mayo Clinic website (see links below), and since I'm not a medical professional, I can only quote the information they have posted. With that said, here is some information regarding knee pain symptoms:

"A knee injury can affect any of the ligaments, tendons or fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that surround your knee joint as well as the bones, cartilage and ligaments that form the joint itself. Because of the knee's complexity, the number of structures involved, the amount of use it gets over a lifetime, and the range of injuries and diseases that can cause knee pain, the signs and symptoms of knee problems can vary widely." [2]

Joint pain, not just in the knee, can be due to a variety of reasons. Age is the primary cause of arthritis, but other risk factors are obesity, heredity, injury such as a fracture, or athletes who overuse their joints. These factors are often associated with osteoarthritis.

Joint pain can also be caused by inflammation. Many of you have probably heard the term inflammation many times before. When you joint becomes inflammed, it causes severe pain, and limits your joints range of motion. Inflammed joints, according to some health care professionals, are the main reason people experience so much pain. What is inflammation and how does it relate to joint pain? And how do we get pain relief from that inflammatiom?

As we conclude, I think the last question on the most frequently asked questions list, regarding TriVita's Sonoran Bloom Nopalea™ is probably the most important of all. As mentioned in my previous two posts (where we covered the sugar, salt and iron content of Nopalea, and the compatibility of prescription medications) questions always arise when it comes to new health and wellness products. This is not unique to Nopalea!

Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, writes a Weekly Wellness Report. In the latest report, he wrote about the top three questions asked regarding Nopalea™. This is the third most frequently asked question:

How much Nopalea can I take in a day?

"The label recommends one to three ounces daily. This is based on minimum amounts in otherwise healthy people. However, the greater the level of your inflammation, the more anti-inflammatory strategies you will need. That makes sense, doesn't it? You wouldn't want to quench a forest fire with a single bucket of water!" [1]

Endobronchial inflammation, the main cause of asthma, is one such disease that is treated with more than one anti-inflammatory strategy. According to an article published by Pub Med, the writer mentions the many different strategies one can use to treat asthma, and provide pain relief. However, and this is just my opinion, if we can prevent the inflammation, by using a product like Nopalea, we would not have to treat the disease. As a matter of fact, the article even mentions prevention. "Patients must be educated to increase their understanding of the benefits of preventive rather than symptomatic forms of treatment for this (asthma) chronic disease." [2]

As I mentioned in my previous post, when it comes any new health and wellness product there are always questions about why, when and how to use it. Sometimes there are even concerns regarding the product, which leads to the second most frequently asked question about Sonoran Bloom Nopalea,™ TriVita's wonderful anti-inflammatory and pain relief product.

Will Nopalea interfere with my medications?

According to TriVita's latest Weekly Wellness Report, Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, has this to say about the interference of Nopalea with prescription drug medications:

"Your physician and pharmacist know you best - ask them! We will say this: With over 200 papers published on the benefits of the Nopal cactus superfruit in human health, we have not found even one negative reaction or drug interaction. The only caution we discovered concerns the blood-thinner warfarin (Coumadin)." [1]

"Warfarin is an anticoagulant. It is used to decrease the clotting ability of the blood and to help prevent harmful clots from forming in the blood vessels. It is often used to prevent or treat deep venous thrombosis, a condition in which harmful blood clots form in the blood vessels of the legs. These blood clots can travel to the lungs and cause a condition called pulmonary embolism. Warfarin is also used to prevent or treat blood clots that are caused by certain heart conditions or open-heart surgery." [2]

If you take warfarin you need to speak with your pharmacist. Nopalea is a fruit juice. In rare instances, people on warfarin will be restricted from consuming fruit juices for a short time while their medication stabilizes. Only your physician and pharmacist know if you should be restricted from fruit juices at this time, so ask them before you take it. But TriVita has not found a single instance of drug interaction in the medical literature; Nopalea should be very safe, especially if you're drinking it because you're looking for pain relief that is caused by chronic inflammation.

Here are some warnings about Warfarin. These are taken from the Mayo Clinic website:

"Warfarin, especially if taken incorrectly, increases your risk of dangerous bleeding. Warfarin also can interact badly with some foods, prescription medicines and over-the-counter supplements. If you accidentally cut yourself while taking warfarin, you may bleed heavily. You're more likely to have bleeding problems if you're older than 75 or take other medications that can further increase your bleeding risk." [3]

While I did not find anything regarding a dangerous interaction between warfarin and Nopalea, I'll have to take TriVita's word on what they have found. I did see where cranberry juice and cranberries can have an affect on it. "Consumption of cranberries or cranberry juice can affect the way warfarin works and can increase your risk of bleeding. While an occasional glass of cranberry juice is unlikely to injure you, you should avoid drinking it regularly." [3]

Before taking any health and wellness supplement, talk to your doctor, especially if you're taking prescription medications. If you're suffering from inflammation, and looking for natural pain relief ask your doctor if Nopalea can help.

As with any new health and wellness product, there are always questions about why, when and how to use it. The more popular the product, the more frequently the questions are repeated. This is the case with TriVita's newest product, Sonoran Bloom Nopalea™.

Within TriVita's latest Weekly Wellness Report, Mr. Brazos Minshew, Chief Science Officer for TriVita, attempts to answer some of the more common questions about Nopalea™, TriVita's wonderful anti-inflammatory and pain relief product.

The most frequently asked questions are too important not to dedicate an individual post for each question. Because of the importance of these questions, I'll break them down into three separate articles and then try to find some research, or case studies, if applicable, to back up what Mr. Minshew has to say. I may also leave you with a thought provoking question, something for you to ponder.

How much sugar, salt and iron are in Nopalea?

"Nopalea™ contains NO ADDED SUGAR. It is naturally sweet. Yet it is still low-calorie and low-carbohydrate. Interestingly, the calories and carbohydrates will change from batch to batch depending on the harvest. Nopalea is "wildcrafted," meaning that Nopalea is not cultivated, and no fertilizers, pesticides or chemicals of any kind are ever used - ever! It is harvested from the Sonoran Desert by natives just as it has been for thousands of years. Since it is not cultivated, the concentration of sugars and minerals in the plant change depending on how much rain we have that year. When it comes to products that have been wildcrafted, there are strict guidelines that must be followed. According to Wikipedia, "in the United States of America, wildcrafted plants are regulated by the Organic Food Production Act of 1990. Harvesters must designate the area they are harvesting and provide a three-year history of the area that shows no prohibited substances have been applied there. A plan for harvesting must show that the harvest will sustain the wild crop. No prohibited substances can be added by processors." [2]

So as you can see by these strict guidelines, you can be assured that Nopalea is truly an all natural organic pain relief product.

Mr. Minshew says that in providing the proper nutritional information to the consumer, Nopalea™ does present a challenge, and he continues his discussion by saying, "Nopalea™ is the first product of its kind. Therefore, no "standards" data existed before we created them. So, label changes happen because we created the testing standards to accurately measure the rare and powerful constituents of Nopalea." [1]

As mentioned previously, Nopalea™ comes from the nopal cactus that is found in the Sonoran Desert, located in the southwestern United States, and the northwestern parts of Mexico. Some historians have said that the ancient Mexican cultures, living in the high mountain volcanic regions, originally adopted the Nopal prickly pear cactus as a healing food, for pain relief, and treasured this high mountain variety, relegating Nopal cactus as the supreme healing plant and food among its kings and warriors.

I'm not sure if that statement is correct, but if you search Google for Sonoran Bloom Nopalea, this is the type of information you will find, and nothing about other products created using the nopal cactus. As we all know, if there was another product, you would find it on the web by searching Google. So judge for your self! Is Nopalea™ a one of a kind product?

It's becoming more and more alarming - the global water crisis that is. If you haven't heard about it, you've probably been living under a rock. I know the global economic issues have been taking up all of the headlines, however, there still remains a catastrophic global water problem. As one article claims, we are facing "water bankruptcy."

"Humanity is facing 'water bankruptcy' as a result of a crisis even greater than the financial meltdown now destabilizing the global economy, two authoritative new reports show. They add that it is already beginning to take effect, and there will be no way of bailing the earth out of water scarcity."

"The two reports – one by the world's foremost international economic forum and the other by 24 United Nations agencies – presage the opening tomorrow of the most important conference on the looming crisis for three years. The World Water Forum, which will be attended by 20,000 people in Istanbul, will hear stark warnings of how half the world's population will be affected by water shortages in just 20 years' time, with millions dying and increasing conflicts over dwindling resources."[1]

How has this crisis got to this point without making global headlines? I believe it's because the government (media) does not want to scare you into thinking we have a problem. They (government) may even think this problem may go away. However, according to viable sources, it's not going away anytime soon. And if we don't start to conserve water, it may be too late when we do start to hear more about this crisis.

We waste millions of gallons of water a day, and some of the biggest water waster may be industrial manufacturing plants. Being informed of the water shortage problems we are facing is very important. However, understanding what we can do to help and how we can save money at the same time is also very important. That's why I've been searching Google looking for information regarding industrial wastewater treatment, industrial water recycling, scaling and corrosion.

I've compiled a short list which I've acquired from Wikipedia. Hopefully, this informatin will give you a better understanding of items listed above. Since we are targeting industrial manufacturing plants, this information is best suited for them. However, that does not mean there are not other industries that could benefit from this information.

Water treatment is used to optimize most water-based industrial processes, such as: heating, cooling, processing, cleaning, and rinsing, so that operating costs and risks are reduced. Poor water treatment lets water interact with the surfaces of pipes and vessels which contain it. Steam boilers can scale up or corrode, and these deposits will mean more fuel is needed to heat the same amount of water. Cooling towers can also scale up and corrode, but left untreated, the warm, dirty water they can contain will encourage bacteria to grow, and Legionnaires' Disease can be the fatal consequence. Also, water treatment is used to improve the quality of water contacting the manufactured product e.g. semiconductors, and/or can be part of the product e.g. beverages, pharmaceuticals, etc. In these instances, poor water treatment can cause defective products. Domestic water can become unsafe to drink if proper hygiene measures are neglected.[1]

Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer process waste heat to the atmosphere. Cooling towers may either use the evaporation of water to remove process heat and cool the working fluid to near the wet-bulb air temperature or rely solely on air to cool the working fluid to near the dry-bulb air temperature. Common applications include cooling the circulating water used in oil refineries, chemical plants, power stations and building cooling. The towers vary in size from small roof-top units to very large hyperboloid structures (as in Image 1) that can be up to 200 metres tall and 100 metres in diameter, or rectangular structures (as in Image 2) that can be over 40 metres tall and 80 metres long. Smaller towers are normally factory-built, while larger ones are constructed on site. They are often associated with nuclear power plants in popular culture.[2]

Industrial water treatment objectives:
Industrial water treatment seeks to manage four main problem areas: scaling, corrosion, microbiological activity and disposal of residual wastewater. Boilers do not have many problems with microbes as the high temperatures prevents their growth.

Scaling occurs when the chemistry and temperature conditions are such that the dissolved mineral salts in the water are caused to precipitate and form solid deposits. These can be mobile, like a fine silt, or can build up in layers on the metal surfaces of the systems. Scale is a problem because it insulates and heat exchange becomes less efficient as the scale thickens, which wastes energy. Scale also narrows pipe widths and therefore increases the energy used in pumping the water through the pipes.

Corrosion occurs when the parent metal oxidises (as iron rusts, for example) and gradually the integrity of the plant equipment is compromised. The corrosion products can cause similar problems to scale, but corrosion can also lead to leaks, which in a pressurised system can lead to catastrophic failures.

Since the fortieth anniversary of earth day passed by a couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd take this time to look at how far we've come and where we are headed when it comes to "going green."

Started by former Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day has brought to light the deterioration of the environment through pollution, loss of wilderness, extravagant use of our natural resources, and extinction of wildlife. It's even been noted that earth day helped align political groups from all walks of life and may have even been responsible for the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

It's also been noted by many observers that the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species acts were by-products of the first Earth Day.

According to the former Senator, "Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself."[1]

The EPA, fueled by the concerned United States citizens, are responsible for cleaning up the lakes, rivers, streams, and the air we breathe. Species of all sorts, from animals, plants, trees, insects, birds, and mammals, have been preserved due to this huge movement. The Water Environment Federation is a not-for-profit association that provides technical education and training for thousands of water quality professionals who clean water and return it safely to the environment. So, what is the actual wastewater treatment comprised of? Does the wastewater process actually clean the water and bring it back to a potable state? According to the Cornell University web site, the process is quite complex, but fairly easy to understand.

"Wastewater treatment uses microbes to decompose organic matter in sewage. If too much untreated sewage or other organic matter is added to a lake or stream, dissolved oxygen levels will drop too low to support sensitive species of fish and other aquatic life. Wastewater treatment systems are designed to digest much of the organic matter before the wastewater is released so that this will not occur."[2]

"Treatment systems use physical, chemical, and biological processes. The primary treatment physically removes large solids using grates, screens, and settling tanks. The secondary treatment promotes growth of bacteria and other microbes that break down the organic wastes."[2]

"These biodegradation processes also take place in streams, lakes, and oceans, but the purification systems in nature can easily be overloaded with input of too much organic waste. Secondary treatment prevents this type of pollution by degrading most of the organic matter before the water is released into the environment."[2]

"Tertiary treatment is used only where it is needed to protect the receiving waters from excess nutrients. In tertiary treatment, the concentrations of phosphorus or nitrogen are reduced through biological or chemical processes. Disinfection kills disease-causing organisms, most commonly through chlorination."[2]

Although the wastewater treatment process outlined above if for sewage, there are some similarities to the treatment of wastewater industrial plants. I'm sure if the water is being returned to the environment, the WEF will in some way be involved.

Is a water shortage looming just over the horizon? According to an article written in December 1999, entitled "Global Water Shortage Looms In New Century", we are on the verge of a major global water shortage.

A quote from the article states "The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages that threaten health and economies while 40 percent of the world - more than 2 billion people - have no access to clean water or sanitation."[1]

I realize this article may have been written just a little over ten years ago, so we'll fast forward to the year 2009 and the UN summit for climate change that took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. One statement says, "global pressure on freshwater resources is increasing, mainly through changes in global population and income levels, which have led to an increase in demand for water intensive products such as meat, sugar and cotton." [2]

There are many differing thoughts and opinions with regards to climate change; however, the facts remain that "increasing population, industry, economic growth and urbanization put additional stress on the provision of clean water from dwindling reserves."[2] These factual statements cannot and should not be overlooked. We, as individuals should be doing our part to conserve water, or suggest to manufacturing that recycling wastewater is a viable option to the conservation of fresh water.

"More than 1 billion people are currently living without clean drinking water, and an estimated 3 billion people could be facing similar water shortages in less than 45 years."[1] That quote comes from the SixWise.com web site. In an article on the site, the author writes about the growing concern facing the world in the years to come.

This is not the only place on the Internet that's showing concern over the looming water shortage. Some organizations, including NASA and World Health Organization (WHO), are predicting that approximately 4 billion people will be facing "severe" water shortages by the year 2050. And the water shortage could hit the southwestern United States as early as 2025, a scary thought if you live in that part of the states. This is not new news, as it's been a round for over a century now. However, today it's becoming more and more publicized.

The World Water Council (WWC) warns of the issues facing many countries throughout the world. The WWC was "established in 1996 in response to increasing concern from the global community about world water issues. Its mission is to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, including the highest decision-making level, to facilitate the efficient management and use of water in all its dimensions and on an environmentally sustainable basis."

I've been writing about the water shortage that's plaguing world for some time now. As I'm writing this article more and more people are struggling to find fresh, non polluted water to drink. These wonderfully created resources are now in real danger. And the fresh water these rivers provide for people to drink is becoming a real hazard. "2 billion people lack access to clean water and 1 billion people do not have enough to even meet their daily needs."[2]

Industrial waste water treatment can be divided into three categories; boiler water treatment, cooling water treatment, and wastewater treatment. According to Wikipedia, "water treatment is used to optimize most water-based industrial processes, such as: heating, cooling, processing, cleaning, and rinsing, so that operating costs and risks are reduced."

"Poor water treatment lets water interact with the surfaces of pipes and vessels which contain it. Steam boilers can scale up or corrode, and these deposits will mean more fuel is needed to heat the same amount of water. Cooling towers can also scale up and corrode, but left untreated, the warm, dirty water they can contain will encourage bacteria to grow, and Legionnaires' Disease can be the fatal consequence."

"Furthermore, water treatment is used to improve the quality of water contacting the manufactured product e.g. semiconductors, and/or can be part of the product e.g. beverages, pharmaceuticals, etc. In these instances, poor water treatment can cause defective products. Domestic water can become unsafe to drink if proper hygiene measures are neglected." [1]

It is my belief that with the proper industrial water treatment, scaling, corrosion, and deposits can be highly reduced, if not totally eliminated.
